How Does The Thyroid Work?

The gland thyroid is an important organ that regulates the body ‘s metabolism  and on the front of the neck just below the larynx. The thyroid gland secretes two thyroid hormones main: thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) .

The speed at which thyroxine and triiodothyronine are released is controlled by the pituitary gland and hypothalamus, which is an area at the base of the brain that acts as a thermostat.

These hormones influence every cell of your body because it involved practically in all the organic functions activating them and keeping the rhythm of life, such as controlling the temperature of your body, influencing heart rate and regulate the production of proteins, between others. The thyroid gland also produces calcitonin , a hormone that helps regulate the amount of calcium in the blood.

The hypothalamus signals the pituitary gland, the production of a hormone called thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). The pituitary gland releases TSH, which depends on the amount of thyroxine and triiodothyronine in your blood; s i do not have enough thyroxine or triiodothyronine in the blood, the TSH level is higher than normal and if you have too much, your TSH level will drop below normal levels.

Finally, the thyroid gland regulates the production of hormones based on the amount of TSH. As long as your thyroid releases adequate amounts of these hormones , the system functions normally happen , p ero sometimes the thyroid does not produce enough hormones , altering the balance of chemical reactions in your body. This condition is known as hypothyroidism. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and the hypothyroidism , are part of the most devastating hypothyroidism. Other times, the thyroid gland can produce too much of the hormone thyroxine , causing hyperthyroidism or overactive thyroid disease.
